The present perfect – a present tense or a past tense?

The present perfect doesn’t exist in all languages and that makes it really difficult for some students! The present perfect is used a lot more in British English than in American English and funnily enough it’s used more in Spain than in Latin America.

There is one big difference between the present perfect in English and the present perfect in Latin languages. In most Romance languages, the present perfect is considered to be a past tense. However, In English the present perfect is a present tense. The action may have happened in the past but the present perfect tells us about the situation now. For this reason, we can’t use a past time reference with the present perfect. For example, I have been to China three times is correct but I have been to China in 1999 is incorrect because 1999 is a past time reference! It is also incorrect in British English to use the present perfect to talk about finished time. For example, I have been to Girona this morning is correct if it is still morning but if the morning has finished, you would have to say, I went to Girona this morning!
